When my kid asked to be Superman for Halloween... Of course I said YES! Read below for my D.I.Y. Superman Halloween Costume Tutorial!
Lily & Frog Supplies:
- 2 Yards of Red Flannel
- 2 Sheets of Red felt
- 2 Sheets of Yellow felt
- Thread (color of your choice)
- 1 yard of ribbon (I use Grosgrain Ribbon)
- Elastic
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting Board and Cutting Square
- Iron
- Fusible Webbing
- Superhero Letter Template (slightly altered mine)
- Tape Measure
- Chalk
- Navy Color Long Sleeve T-Shirt
- Navy Color Slacks
Lily & Frog Instructions:
Superman "S": Start with designing your Super Hero Shield, the big giant "S" for Superman, using the 2 sheets of red felt and 2 sheets of yellow felt. You will be designing 2 Superman Shields from my tutorial. I would suggest using the template from Vanilla Joy, you may have to make slight alterations to the shape to fit onto one sheet of felt. Iron and sew one Superman Shield to the front of your long sleeve navy shirt.
Superman Cape: Design your Super Hero Cape with the red flannel. You will be designing this cape from my tutorial. I did make slight alterations to my design; I did not use a ribbon necktie, instead I created the necktie from the red flannel and snaps. Iron and sew one Superman Shield to the front of your long sleeve navy shirt.
Superman Belt: Using 1 yard of yellow grosgrain, wrap the ribbon around your toddler's waist creating a belt. I used snaps to hold the ends together.
Superman Red Boots: Design your Super Hero Boots with the remaining red flannel from the cape designing and a tutorial from The Craft Patch called Syndrome Costume Mini-Tutorial plus Easy Boot Tutorial. I used Zach's sneakers as a template, adding 1/3 inch to the edge for the seam and for a little 'give.' I stitched together the two pieces and created a seam along the top of the boot opening and the bottom of the shoe opening. Originally, I did not want to add the elastic to the underside of his boot covers, I did not think they were necessary. Boy was I wrong, I went back to add them, it made the costume look much better because it held the Boot Cover in place.
What a snazzy little Superman our little man is!
